Why are we so sceptical? Well, aside from the history of similar panic, as UK DJ/producer Mr Scruff told the Guardian this week, the digital revolution hasn’t effected the DJ market in nearly the same way as it has the rest of the music industry. Yes, vinyl sales are nowhere near what they once were, but they're still big enough that any club worth going to is going to need a pair of 1200s in the booth. And sure, other companies make DJ turntables too, but none of them have even come close to replacing the 1200 as industry standard.
On top of that, even though most DJs play digital files these days instead of records, the delivery method of choice involves controlling those files using special time-code records with systems like Serato, which means the clubs still need 1200s even if no one is playing traditional vinyl. While you can control them with DJ CD players as well, it looks a lot cooler with a vinyl controller, and is easier to adjust to for DJs that grew up playing actual records.
