NAMM is here again. No not the Winter one in Anaheim, but the lesser known one Nashville. Skratchworx won't be in attendance, if only because the big DJ guns tend to get wheeled out in January. But as ever, the mighty Numark corporation is there and has some stuff of interest - namely MIXTRACK.
You'll recall Numark's subsidiary ION Audio rolling out the wallet friendly but still highly usable Discover DJ. Well MIXTRACK looks like the bigger brother, cast from the same affordable mould, but shoehorning a serious amount of DJ artillery into the case courtesy of Traktor LE.
Without having one at hand, I can only hope that MIXTRACK has the same promising platter performance of Discover DJ that won me over so easily. The following blurb fills in a few gaps...
NUMARK ANNOUNCES MIXTRACK DJ SOFTWARE CONTROLLER
MIXTRACK Offers Cutting-Edge Software Control with Touch-Sensitive Decks
Cumberland, R.I. (June 18, 2010) – Numark, the world’s leading manufacturer of DJ technology, announces MIXTRACK, a new DJ software controller to be showcased at the 2010 Summer NAMM Show in Nashville TN, Booth #400, June 18 - 20.
MIXTRACK’s layout will be instantly familiar to DJs because it works just like two decks and a mixer. Perfect for building DJ skills or playing gigs, MIXTRACK is easy to learn and handles advanced performance techniques at an unbeatable price.
MIXTRACK has two deck controllers with large touch-activated jog wheels and transport controls. Whether a DJ is used to a CD player, turntables, or any other traditional DJ hardware, they'll find getting around MIXTRACK to be easy. MIXTRACK contains colored LEDs for Transport, Loop, and Effects buttons for quick referencing during performance on stage or in the studio. The center of MIXTRACK’s surface is its mixer section with a smooth crossfader, line faders, deck EQs, and advanced controls for looping and effects. It's portable too, so DJs can grab MIXTRACK and a laptop and effortlessly get to the gig.
MIXTRACK comes with Native Instruments Traktor LE software, which is based on Traktor Pro. This popular, easy-to-learn software is made for mixing, remixing, and producing music. Beatgrid editing and saving with locked sync are included for precise performance. Also included is manual looping and selectable loop length for flexible loop integration.
Additionally, Traktor LE provides several effects per deck including filter, delay, reverb and flanger. MIXTRACK comes factory mapped for use not only with Traktor LE but also Traktor Pro and Duo, so Traktor power users, will be ready to go right out of the box.
Full MIDI compliance means MIXTRACK will also work with virtually any MIDI- mappable music software. MIXTRACK connects to a Mac or PC as a class- compliant USB device so it requires no software drivers to work, and USB powers it so you won't need an external supply.
“MIXTRACK offers unparalleled function and ease for the aspiring DJ looking for a capable, compact solution.” said Chris Roman, Product Manager, Numark.
MIXTRACK will be available from musical instrument and DJ retailers in July 2010. It has a U.S. Retail Price of $249.99 and an estimated street price of $149.99.
No word on European pricing, but at this level and exchange rate, I'm guessing at a £149/€149, which is still more than fair for this.
Doubtlessly a review will follow in due course. It's not like it'll take long.
